RESIDENTIAL HEATING & COOLING

Residential Heating and Cooling

It’s easy to take residential heating and cooling for granted. You flip a switch, press a button or even whip out your smart phone and soon your home is the perfect temperature. Summer days are suddenly nice and cool, and on winter nights, you are warm and cozy in bed. Unfortunately, residential cooling and heating systems only provide these benefits when they are in good shape. As they age, and if they are not properly maintained, those benefits begin to dwindle.

HOW HVAC SYSTEMS WORK

There are three components in place to help you regulate temperatures in your home. These include a source of cooling or heating the air, a system to distribute it, and a user interface to put control in your hands. A common source for heat is a furnace and a common source for cool air is an air conditioning unit. In most instances, both of these use the same means of distributing air throughout your home.

When it comes to regulating temperatures, HVAC units tend to follow the concept that heat is attracted to cooler spaces and objects. Because of this, furnaces warm a home by adding heat to the air, while air conditioners cool a home by removing the heat.

COMMON PROBLEMS

For the most part, HVAC units are robust and can last up to 20 years without any big problems, especially if they are well-maintained. However, when they do act up, here are some of the most common issues that need to be addressed:

  • Low refrigerant levels
  • Clogged filters
  • Obstructed condenser vent
  • Sluggish fan
  • Broken parts

When these issues arise, it can be tempting to fix them yourself to save money. However, if you make a mistake and worsen the problem, that repair bill will be even higher when you finally call the professionals. To ensure the job gets done right the first time, work with contractors who are bonded, licensed and insured. Another great benefit of this is that should anything go wrong on the job, you won’t be held liable.

HVAC UNIT REPLACEMENT

Sometimes an HVAC system isn’t quite broken, but it may be taking longer than usual to heat or cool the house. Your energy bill may also begin to reflect this. At this point, it may be time to upgrade or replace your HVAC unit. Here are just a few common indicators that this is the case:

  • Your system is more than 10 years old.
  • You have fixed a primary component in the past year, such as a compressor, motor or coil.
  • Your system makes large clunking and thudding noises when you turn on the air.
